"We like our art dangerous. We want to be provoked, shocked, teased. We like our public art big, brash and spectacular. But, it turns out, no one told the artists that "dangerous" was a metaphorical term. When councils all over Britain called up sculptors and said "surprise us", they didn't mean "drop steel spikes from a great height".

Hello everyone. Joseph Matheny here. I'm honored and happy to be a new contributor to the FP blog. As my maiden post, I'm including a podcast and a free movie. (Yeah, free things!) Below is a description of the two items. Looking forward to many more posts.
In this very special edition of The GSpot, Joseph Matheny talks to Raymond Salvatore Harmon about the special release of his movie, The Philosopher's Stone on Greylodge as a torrent to be followed by a "Press to Play" version being released on Altertube.tv and Pilotlite.com, and then a podcast edition to be released on Alterati, Greylodge and Pilotlite.
Joe and Ray discuss art on the fringe, how Ray came to film making, the
Chicago art scene, and why the economy means nothing to artists working
on the fringes.

The
Philosopher's Stone tells the story of Jacob Fausstman, a scientist and
early alchemist who searches for the key to curing man of the disease
of death. In his frustration Jacob stumbles onto another path to
achieve his goals. Turning to the dark arts Jacob conjures the demon
Mephistopheles and is given the key to eternal life. But his
perceptions of 'life eternal' and the nature of his existence comes
into question once he has obtained his desire for true knowledge.
Base in equal parts on the Faustian archetype and the biographical story of Dr. Albert Hoffmann's accidental discovery of LSD, The Philosopher's Stone is an homage to early German Expressionist cinema and the psychedelic visualizations of drug culture.

What critics have said about Harmon's work:
'For Harmon, the visual density of the abstract imagery used will enable the viewer to enter an almost hypnagogic, liminal state, and become perceptually distant from the sense of the real. Once the enveloping visual content has become the landscape of the mind to the viewer, the subliminal content will have access to the subconscious mind.” - Jack Sargeant
“Accentuating the trio's vibrant performances with colorization, layered collages, dense textures and split-screen effects, Harmon becomes a virtual fourth member of the ensemble.” - All About Jazz, on Chronicle
'The subdued flame-like flashes and sounds reinforce the feeling of quietly smoldering passion. Together, these elements come together to create a delicate composition which is abstract, yet full of feeling.' - FilmThreat.com on Tiny Inconsistencies

A letter from the director;
In choosing to distribute this film I have decided to skip the theatrical presentation stage and go directly to sourcing the film via the bit torrent network. By giving the public full access to this film I hope to encourage other filmmakers to realize the potential of their audience by abandoning the outdated model of cinematic distribution in favor of an open relationship with the viewers themselves.
After years of struggle with the format of distribution cinema has found an ever evolving platform of distribution on the internet. Years of so called 'format wars', first between film gauges and then between dv formats, have ended in the wake of widening broadband access for the average person.
The ability for anyone to simple download and watch a film already exists, as does the ability for anyone to make a film and allow the world to experience it directly. The filmmaker has a wide range of encoding practices available that allow them to maximize video quality for each project's distribution on the web. As further technologies and better codecs are develop the filmmaker will be able to expand on the available sources for the cinematic presentation.
As much as the Philosopher's Stone visually represents a historic period in early 20th century cinema it looks forward to a future unfettered by lack of distribution and a platform for broadcast that gives everyone a chance to experience cinema to its fullest.
This film is meant as a mirror, reflecting what has been onto what will become.
Obviam lux Lucis

For years, P. Emerson Williams has explored and defined industrial blackmetal, and post-metal, touched on pre-jazz, retro-punk-black-speedy-jazz-thrash to the edges of contemporary noise music, and that just within the limits of any one track of the xeno music project Choronzon. Further experimentation with ritualistic trance states can be found to varying degrees in his work with Veil of Thorns, and collaborations with Manes, subQtaneous and now with the art collective kkoagulaa. In the last few years, P. Emerson has been working with more and more musicians, writers and artists on works including illustration, voice acting and soundtrack music for James Curcio's novel Fallen Nation and its attendant audio book. He has been showing art at music festivals and performing at art galleries. It has been rumored in parapolitical circles that he is the voice of the audio book versions of El-Centro and the Incunabula Papers, but he's not talking. We can say for sure that he has been contributing some decidedly odd work to Alterati.com.
P. Emerson Williams has been retrofitting his mind with self-coded patches for as long as he can remember. What this means in practical terms is that he uses his art as part myth making, part mediation and part deprogramming. His method for making music involves self indiced trance states and rituals to peel away layers of ego and persona and avoid habits of technical skill. His visual method is to sit still, shut up and get out. He'll let his subconscious take hold of the brush or pencil, and will not direct it until he understands what is being conjured and only then will he help pull the elements of the images into higher relief. His tools are mostly old world: pencil, ink, brush, oils and watercolors. He'll use the computer if someone asks nicely, though, and for his sporadic video projects. Mr. Williams is currently illustrating «Stalker Variations» a collaborative vivisection of romance and obsession with author Jason Stackhouse, multi media re-constructuralism with kkoagulaa and an as yet secret project.
"Art exists for you to shape it, hijack it and remake, remix, reiterate and even reject it. It is for you to inspire thought, critical thinking, re-consideration. Society, culture and all actions in space-time are examples of art, and by extension acts of magic and the continued creation of the Universe. This is why art has been confined within its gilded cage, for it is too dangerous to remain at large. I'm very excited to be contributing to Terra:Extremitas. What we have here is a tying together of scattered and hidden fragments from which it has been difficult to apprehend the greater narrative and act upon it. But through this collage, this act of going from solve to coagula, we can begin to understand the holographic nature of matter and thought."
Stephan Brusche (1977) is living in Rotterdam (Netherlands) with his lovely wife-to-be. He makes a living as a graphic designer, but also likes to paint and draw comics. He has won the 'Clickie Humor Benelux'-award for his interactive webcomic 'My Weekly Comic' but that doesnt mean he hates the traditional way comics are presented on paper.
His style may come across as 'pretty dark', but as a sincere believer in Christ he also wants his work to point towards the light and even more so to motivate people to think about it. Thats how his character Lucifer started and thats why Lucifer is in the whole Terra Extremitas-project.
