Michael and the Heygate Estate - One Picture a Month Project - Yiannis Katsaris.

Michael is one of the last residents still living at the Heygate Estate. The estate was completed in 1974 and is located in the London Borough of Southwark, south of Elephant and Castle. It has 1100 homes and a reputation for crime, poverty and deprivation. It's been ten years since the council first announced that the Heygate estate was to be demolished as part of a regeneration/gentrification scheme. The plan is to build a major new town centre for south London, containing new commercial and leisure facilities, an updated transport interchange and 5,300 new homes. The demolition of the Heygate Estate is an essential part of this plan and re-housing Heygate residents into quality new homes in the local area is now a priority. With most of the last few tenants already evicted from their homes, the majority of the last remaining residents – 35 households - on the Heygate estate are leaseholders. Michael and his family however own their house. He refuses to move out because he claims the council is undervaluing the price of his house. He says the amount the council deems it's worth, is not enough for a similar 3-bedroom apartment in central London. His family will either have to relocate far from the centre or apply for a mortgage to be able to afford a new house in the same area.

The Little Black Gallery

The Little Black Gallery is a photography gallery that was set up by Tamara Beckwith, Lindsey Carlos Clarke and Ghislain Pascal in November 2008.

From the 14th April until the 5th of June this year their Bob Carlos Clarke retrospective, Full Throttle, caused controversy amongst The Little Black Gallery's neighbours with the display of pieces such as Tite Street (below).

This exhibition of one of my favourite photographers may be over, but the gallery is also home to the Bob Carlos Clarke Foundation and has a permanent room of work by the legendary photographer - so make sure you visit, or at the very least, keep track of upcoming shows here.

The images presented by the thirteen artists in this exhibition depict views taken on a figurative walk along the frontier between reality and the imagination. On this meandering journey the viewer weaves his or her way across the line that demarcates the boundary between the mundane scenery of familiar places and the surreal landscapes of the individual mind.

The trip begins with portrayals of everyday, humdrum surburbias and industrial spaces but ones which hint at something darker, of failed aspirations and the desire to escape this claustrophobic environment. Hidden amidst the picturesque landscapes lurk fantastic tales and rituals and mystical places. As the artists travel deeper towards the periphery of their thoughts, they conjure up parallel worlds, at times unstable and stormy and devoid of human presence.

Dreams form a notable reference point for the images, the artists drawing on the nightmares of the past and constructing them into human hybrids. They retreat into the world of the imagination and into their obsessions of repressed memories, unconscious thought and fantasy. Their work is violent and sexual, restless and macabre. The work fragments into a mass of organic and apocalyptic forms, as the artists unravel their subconscious thoughts through painterly and graphic gestures that struggle to climb over one another and vie for attention.

The work is decadent and obsessive. It appears real and is dutifully imagined with intense detail, so that the forms allude to something that could exist. What these artists all have in common is the ability to transform the imaginary into something tangible; an ordering of the subconscious into something we can almost recognize and therefore comprehend. The viewer is seduced into believing that the threshold between reality and the imagination can be bridged.

I'm a fractious Beverly Hills JAP but I am one. I saw the Old World’s last, and arguably most famous, act. I swam in Jayne Mansfield's heart shaped pool. I sailed on the France when doves flew into the ballroom at midnight, beluga in pyramids, no big deal. I ate tins for lunch. My best friend’s parents were movie stars. Other kids’ parents were famous but I was The Rich Kid. WE had the apartment in New York. I had the famous decorator bedroom. My mom’s "Ladies’ Charity" shows were Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., on and on, 'Western' themed, with lots of whee-ha. I saw Richard Pryor yell FUCK YOU at one as his ACT until he was shoved off. My dad's new '64 Bentley had chinchilla rugs and my mom had a jaguar coat. We had black, uniformed servants but our English domestics had The Portuguese working for them at our house on Wilton Crescent, right the hell here.

Fast forward to me having my ‘twenties after my masterpiece, who I raised myself, left for (ahem)Yale. My real 'twenties blew due to rigorous wifedom and a screenwriting career. I got the PARTY! jist quickly and sustained no wounds that aren’t useful. It turned out okay.

A Red Threatening Sky - Second Wave of Artists Announced

FP are proud to announce the second wave of artists collaborating with us on 'A Red Threatening Sky'; an immersive Valentine’s event which takes place in a vast subterranean labyrinth of an old disused abattoir, combining performance, art installation and investigative interaction to create Club Aethereus; a strange and surreal underworld of Gnostic Noir. A place where crime, passion, the sacred and profane all cast one shadow.

Jules Newman - A Red Threatening Sky - Artists Profile

 

Jules Newman is a London based artist whose fascinations with mythology, dreams, and symbols and interests in theatre and performance have led her to work in a variety of roles including in-crowd performer, model, make up artist, set designer, props maker, and events manager. She also runs an online spell shop called 'The Magic Tree', and makes horned headpieces, masks and wigs as part of another project called 'Ghoulia's Peculiars'.

In all her endeavours Jules seeks to stimulate people to challenge their understanding of normality and to engage with their environment, senses and imagination. This can be manifested through meditation, through physical acts that symbolise catharsis, or by encouraging people to embrace the daydreams, wonder, humour and playfulness that may be considered conventionally unacceptable. She aims to provide disguises that reveal truth and enable an authentic and inspiring experience.

Her animal masks from 'The Abattoir Pages', a previous Foolish People event, are being displayed at The Reading Room, 65-66 Frith Street, Soho, London W1D 3JR from 8th February - 2nd March 2010, as part of the 'Miss Kiki Salon Presents...' exhibition.

'Cirxus' Photo Album now available to view

The photographs of 'Cirxus', taken by the talented Yiannis Katsaris can now be viewed in our online gallery.

Greek by birth, freelance photographer Yiannis has been working in London for over a year.

Previously Yiannis was based in Italy working in an advertising studio. He graduated from TEI in Athens with a BA in Photography. He also holds an MA in Photographic Journalism. Currently Yiannis works with national publications in both the UK and Greece.

During his career he’s photographed everything from models, environmental disasters, riots and even a pig farm. Though he would say his trickiest assignment was photographing female wrestlers, those ladies take no prisoners.

Yiannis is available for short and long term assignments in UK and abroad.

Responses to Conflict and Loss

University of Hertfordshire Galleries is delighted to present Responses to Conflict and Loss, an international group exhibition curated by Garry Hunter and produced by the arts collective Fitzrovia Noir. 

The exhibition is a showcase of work in different media, drawing its inspiration from the widely dispersed geography of 20th Century conflict including reflections from Cambodia, France, Spain, Northern Ireland, Romania and Vietnam.
